The Governor of NY, George Pataki, recently vetoed a bill that would have made Emergency Contraception (often called the morning-after pill) available over the counter. Pataki, known to be a supporter of choice, sold out his principles and the women of New York for politics.
People in political circles expect that his reason for doing so is to appeal to political conservatives as he feels out support for a presidential bid. What kind of bullshit is this? This bill passed with large bipartisan support but not enough to override the Governor's veto.
The thing that really pisses me off is that this "political maneuver" affects women's lives...which I guess is unimportant. EC has the potential to reduce the number of unplanned pregnancies and therefore abortions. Making it easier to access is an important step in pregnancy prevention. Unexpected sexual encounters often happen on the weekend when women don't have access to a doctor. EC is more effective the earlier it is taken, therefore, this kind of access is important.
Pataki stated his opposition to the bill on account that minor's would be able to access EC over the counter as well. And we all know what a crime it is to let teens have access to information and contraception that might prevent them from getting pregnant. I guess teen pregnancy is what we're supporting nowdays. I think I missed that memo.

Tell us more! NPR had a story this morning about how the FDA wants to get EC available without prescription. Then they interviewed a pharmacist that wouldn't sell EC because he said that it wasn't considerate of the third party involved. . . the unborn baby. Then they interviewed a Dr. who said that there wasn't a pregnancy untill the fertilized egg embeded itself into the wall of the uterus - a sperm and egg does not a baby make. I guess EC prevents the fertilized egg from embedding in the wall of the uterus thus preventing a baby. This is NOT RU42. It is emergency contraception. Keep your laws out of our uteruses!
