My Reality

I have a love/hate relationship with Reality TV. I love to watch it, but I hate myself for doing it like it takes away from my intellect, class or sophistication. Yesterday I was home sick from work and my better self wanted me to watch movies, and I tried, really, I did. Sometime between trying to decide whether to watch Don't Tell Mom, The Babysitter is Dead or Pokemon, the movie, bad self stepped in, grabbed the remote and I was head long into four hours of VH1's Celebreality lineup. I am such a sucker for pop culture trivia. I love to see old TV stars washed up living in a house together or trying desperately to loose weight. Sometime after the third episode of Celebrity Fit Club 2, I started to weep. Weep for myself or maybe it was for Victoria Jackson's triumph over loosing 6 pounds. Whatever started it, I needed a lifeline. I tried to dial my reality TV sponsor - but she had her phone turned off! There I was surrounded by a pile of wedding magazine clippings, to-do lists and addresses, I needed to do SOMETHING.

So I took a nap then watched Ellen. I was back in business.

What IS IT about reality TV that sucks you in? I mean I love, in a not so natural way, some reality TV shows. I love What Not to Wear - please anyone, feel free to sign me up for that show. I LUV Trailer Fabulous. I cry at the end of every Trading Spaces or While You Were Out. I can't even turn on Extreme Home Makeover for fear of a flood of tears. I feel so guilty about not keeping track of my friends from the Real World. Thank GOD that Sex and the City (best show ever) is on Tuesday and Wednesday nights or who knows, I might never recover from the Amazing Race. I can't wait for the new Martha Stewart spinoff of the Apprentice. But if you were to ask me, I NEVER watch Reality TV and I think it is stupid. By the way. . . Have you ever seen the Surreal Life - its SO addictive - ug - here I go again. Somebody take away my cable, I am not worthy.
