Apparently I am the new voice of the Secular Progressives! Yeah for me! I wasn't even sure what that stood for, because I don't listen to Rush or O'Reilly, but apparently I want to take away Christmas. Oh goodie.
Secular progressives diminish value of life
I wish to respond to the letter in “Our Readers Speak” Jan. 24 by Connie. She stated that “to me, being pro-choice isn’t about abortion, it is about privacy.” With that rather cavalier statement she summed up the entire philosophy of the secular progressive’s attitude toward human life and its lack of worth or dignity. In addition, her statement is a testament to the self-centeredness of the secular’s view of those around her/him and the belief that whatever I want I deserve to get, and I’ll not take responsibility for any of it.
As an obstetrician/gynecologist, I had years of study that made it perfectly intellectually clear that what is being destroyed in an abortion is a complete living human being and the only thing that separates it from adulthood is time and nourishment. Yet we as a nation value adult human life, even pre-adult human life of children and adolescents, but have used falsehoods, denial and subterfuge to deny the same dignity and value to the pre-born and in some cases to the newborn.
Roe v. Wade was based on a refusal by the Supreme Court to consider the humanness of the life that was being destroyed in the abortion process. This was necessary to get around the very real prohibition against such killing in the writings of our forefathers that states that we all are created equal and endowed with the right to life. No assumed right to privacy can take that away. The right to privacy is not in the federal Constitution or Bill of Rights and had to be assumed by the Supreme Court to get Roe v. Wade passed.
I have been in the operating room when abortions were done. I took care of the second victim of the abortion process, the mothers, and I have seen the long-term after effects of this grisly process. I agree with Connie that we should put prevention first but what needs to be prevented is the pregnancy that drives one to the abortionist. The philosophy of irresponsibility, of whatever-feels-good-do-it, of total rejection of the rights of others in favor of, “I can do anything I want to,” is the driving mechanism behind the pro- abortion mindset. This is what the secular progressive movement is all about.
Dr. Robert M. Rightwing
Another day, another rightwing Christian that is angry at me for having a pro-choice opinion. Sigh. What slays me about this letter is that a guy who might actually be qualified to discuss uteruses doesn't need to drag mine all over the newspaper to bring credo to his argument. Applause. What makes me sad about this letter is that once again, you try to move the argument away from abortion to talk about values and all you get back is dead fucking babies. I value human life that is why want to prevent unplanned pregnancies, so that the human life that is created is truly valued. Calling me pro-abortion is REDIC, call me pro-contraceptive, call me pro-sex ed, call me pro-choice. The secular progressive shit cracks me up. It looks like Dr. Bob got himself a copy of Bill O'Reilly's latest book for Christmas, all of his language is quoted out of the right-wing bullshit movement as if it was scripture.

Interesting how some folks find it necessary to turn two perfectly nice words, "secular" and "progressive,"into derogatory terms. Lovely that this trend started from men like Rush, who is on his umpteenth marriage and pops Vicodin yet screams about the sanctity of marriage and wants to put everyone in jail. He gives drug addicts a bad name. I am still proud to call myself a dog for choice.
