I say if he's worth it, fight to win! So far being nice and letting things take their own course has not been beneficial to me for the past 31 years. I don't mean cat fight, but just specifically and loudly emphasize your strengths versus the other woman's many weaknesses. You know, in a diplomatic scratch-her-eyes-out way. Also, I realize this will not be popular, but get out of Helena if you can. It will entirely kill your soul. Have you paid attention to what women in their late 30s and 40s look like in that town? GET OUT.
