Wisconsin trying to "save" South Dakota

A Wisconsin-based group just filed to start collecting signatures to put the South Dakota ban on the ballot for a referendum in November.

PP of SD director Kate Looby said:
"I think these people have jumped the gun a little bit," Looby said. "Because the people in South Dakota who need to be making this important decision have not made the decision yet whether it should go on the ballot or go to court.

"I think this is not something that can or should come from people outside South Dakota."
Doesn't seem like these out of state "do-gooders" even checked in with local folks before making their decision to file. Very dangerous move, and insulting to the choice advocates of South Dakota who are working every day to keep abortion safe and legal in their state.

PP was planning to have a strategy finalized by next week, and the Wisconsin people jumped in ahead of the local groups. If the same thing had happened in MT, I'd be a little more than pissed.

Being somewhat on the inside of this battle, I know a few things: a) SD is very conservative when it comes to abortion. They've passed every restriction in the book; b) SD had a gay marriage ban on the ballot in November, something sure to bring out our buddies on the right. Some things I don't know: a)what is the capacity of SD choice groups to mobilize people in their state? Can they get enough volunteers on the ground to collect 16,000 signatures? b) Does SD have the same attitude as MT's have about out-of-staters? I assume they won't take to kindly to a bunch of folks flying in to "save" them from themselves.

Who should answer those questions and determine the strategy?....the choice advocates in SD, not some group from Wisconsin, no matter how good their intentions may be.

Thoughts?
