What a feminist looks like.

On the shuttle back to the Pittsburgh airport yesterday, I met a little old lady. She had her hair all dolled up, makeup on and her nicest clothes on. She told us that she was going to Rome on a pilgrimage.

Here is where I tuned out, or should I say that I tried. Whenever someone starts talking about the R.C.C. I start singing la la la in my head.

She explained that she was going to visit a bunch of churches and stay in a convent to study the history of women in the Catholic Church. Her tour guide was a nun who had degrees in theology and women's studies.

Okay, I am listening. I never really associated the R.C.C. with women's studies. . .

She was telling us that in the bible that there isn't any mention of women with the apostles, but there was women that went around with them and helped form the Catholic Church. She is part of a movement to get the R.C.C. to ordain women.

Damn. So I asked her if she was going to get to see the pope while she was there.

She said that she doubted he would want to see them because he was against allowing women into power within the church and that was the goal of their group. She went on to tell us that she thought if people understood how important women are in the history of the church, there is no reason they wouldn't let them be ordained.

Boy - that blew my mind a little, but that is what I get for stereotyping. I turned to my travel buddy as we got into the airport and told her "now that is what a feminist looks like." It is one thing to be a feminist, but to have such deep faith in a church that keeps women down and fight for women's rights, now that is what a REAL feminist looks like.

Speaking of the R.C.C. Check out this church that was converted from a rundown vacated church into something really useful - A BREW HOUSE!

as a christian i would normaly defend the argument that one should not turn a church into a brewhouse, but i have always thought of church as a joke, a waste of time (for me at least) and a level of seperation that exists between God and people. You dont need some child molestor in a collar to tell you how to talk to God. I believe the SHE is always listening and if you truly deserve those things you want, you will get them or die, either way, what are ya gonna do? Fughet about it.

But way to go for this sista! I have been saying that organized religion as a whole is gender biased, mainly because like she said men do not want to share their power (fake power i might add) even the fucking Pope. They all seem pious but deep down they are frightened little boys with no real power, just implied power and i think they realize what kind of a farce they have become and know how easily it can be revealed they are such charlatains. So they subjectify people, especially women. What sense does that make? The only people who stuck up for Jesus as he was being tortured was two women.

I hope she gets what she is fighting for. The catholics may not be on her side, but justice, God and what is right certainly are. Excellent post!
