She went on to state in this speech, "Legislating religion or morality we gave up on a long time ago." She added later, "When science determines the facts, and decisions vary based upon religious belief, then government should not act."
Sounds like a reasonable conclusion to me, even though I'm still not so sure where this woman would actually come down on choice. Not so for our friends on the right like James Dobson. In his CitizenLink email today, Bruce Hausknecht, judicial analyst for Focus on the Family Action, said that speech, which was made to a club called Executive Women of Dallas, was alarming for its mischaracterization of the abortion debate.
He continues,
In the speech, Miers referred to 'self-determination'—which is a code phrase for abortion rights and made the incredible statement — 'Legislating religion or morality, we gave up on a long time ago.' No true conservative would agree with the statement...Of course no conservative with agree that we shouldn't legislate morality. That's the name of the game these days isn't it? Ugh, these people gross me out. Get Old Man McBible out of my underwear please!!!!!!!
