My new job is so very cool. My very first day on the job, I got to take a helicopter ride up and over the continental divide to look at mine sites. So sweet. Ever since then, I have been catching up on historic mine technology, and going for walks. Long walks up and down mountains looking at abandoned mines. I had no idea that work could be so rewarding, or that work could actually make you happy. It is a good sign when my co-workers have been here for 15+ years.
It is a funny job though, I am the first woman to work in this group for an eternity and she was more of an admin person, not a scientist. I am going to need lots of good feminist vibes. . . One of my co-workers said to me last week that he was very liberal when he was young, but now that he is older and really understands the world, he is quite conservative and it will be interesting to watch me transform in this group, politically. I just laughed and told him that there was no way that I would ever be a conservative, much less vote republican because I will always be a woman and I will never be rich. He didn't say much after that, but told me later that day that the reason he liked me so much was because I reminded him of his daughter. So I guess that is kind of nice.
It is good to have something to be positive about these days.

Open mine shaft.

My sister was asked once by the staunch-republican-thinks-he-knows-everything dude whose identity might be guessed by anyone living in Helena why she is a Democrat. She said, "My answer is threefold: 1. I'm a woman. 2. I'm a teacher. 3. I'm an environmentalist. Got any other questions."
He didn't....
