So my adopted grandmother's memorial service was held this weekend at the nursing home where she has lived for the last 8 years. I can tell you one thing, it was the most hilarious memorial services/funerals I have EVER been to. It was held in the TV room/library/faith center/craft area of the home just off of the cafeteria. They had the TV on until the last second so I was pretty worried that once they turned off the TV, half of the room would clear out. Nope, it was a packed house. Midway through the memorial service, the minister opened the microphone up to "sharing time" among the residents. Little old hands shot up all around. One told the audience how she ate with my grandmother and kept her from choking on chicken bones. Another shared that she hadn't known my grandmother very well, but they had shared a bathroom. One with giant orange hair pretty much talked the entire time through sharing time, but at the moment she was allowed the microphone, she announced that my grandmother liked the men. We broke out into impromptu song and it was mentioned that she had nice clothes. It was hard to cry, I was laughing so hard.
I have always hated nursing homes, but I am here to tell you, this home is amazing. The staff was wonderful to my grandmother and she was really happy there. She also had some wonderful friends at the home. My family decided that the staff should have open mic night at the home. Old people say the funniest things.

i cant believe you didnt hear gramma nonsense. she is soooo coming to our thanksgiving dinners. when they asked for a moment of silence, gramma No (short for Nonsense) complained about the gas mileage of a buick she has not seen in decades. it brought a tear to my eye. those fucking buicks DO get terrible city mileage, and she was the only one brazen enough to blurt it out during a moment of silence. rock on Sista!
