The Washington Post recently printed an article about new federal guidelines suggesting we treat all women for health care purposes as "pre-pregnant" from the time of menstration through menopause regardless of when and if they plan on getting pregnant. The thought is that many pregnancies are unplanned and women can do a lot of "damage" to their fetuses if they're not maintaining a certain kind of health standard.
What's next, we ban women from smoking and drinking in case they might get pregnant and harm a fetus? This country does not own my ovaries.
It's this kind of regulation that scares the bejesus out of me. It's the same logic of the "Unborn Victims of Violence Act," putting the value of the fetus above that of a woman. It reminds me of The Handmaids' Tale. Someday, we'll all just be incubators for the state. Seriously.
Is prosecution for unhealthy or "risky" behavior during pregnancy far behind? Are we going to start investigating every miscarriage?
