Kanye West...Who Knew?

I always wonder about if celebrities supporting a cause helps or hurts said cause. But if I were a celebrity, you can bet that I would want to give my money and probably use any kind of pulpit I had to explain why I felt the way I did. I don't think I could help myself.

Apparently on Friday night, Kanye West did just that. During one of the usual "celebrities get together to sing songs, stand in front of photo slideshows of tragedy, and answer phones" programs to raise money for disaster relief from hurricane Katrina, West strayed from the script to speak from his heart on how he felt about the slow response from our federal government to help out the people in Louisiana:

I hate the way they portray us in the media. You see a black family, it says, "They're looting." You see a white family, it says, "They're looking for food." And, you know, it's been five days [waiting for federal help] because most of the people are black. And even for me to complain about it, I would be a hypocrite because I've tried to turn away from the TV because it's too hard to watch. I've even been shopping before even giving a donation, so now I'm calling my business manager right now to see what is the biggest amount I can give, and just to imagine if I was down there, and those are my people down there. So anybody out there that wants to do anything that we can help -- with the way America is set up to help the poor, the black people, the less well-off, as slow as possible. I mean, the Red Cross is doing everything they can. We already realize a lot of people that could help are at war right now, fighting another way -- and they've given them permission to go down and shoot us!

He goes on to say, "George Bush doesn't care about black people!"

Needless to say, NBC freaked and edited out West's comments from the broadcast. But hey, at least there are still some people out there willing to say whatever the hell they want to. Damn political correctness, this is a major fuckup. In the richest country in the world, it shouldn't take 5 days for the government to get its ass in there and help.

Just so you aren't giving wrong info, NBC didn't edit out Kanye West's comments from the broadcast, I watched the benefit and heard what he had to say live and on the air Friday night. I agree with what he said, this is America, we can come to the aid of other countries immediately after tragedy but when it is our own black population, it takes 5 f***ing days to get food and water to them, it is insane!

Today I am going to buy myself a Kanye West album. I hope it is good.
How about this for a Katrina fundraiser - sell "George Bush Doesn't Care About Black People" T-shirts and then ship the money down to the Salvation Army?

I meant to state the West coast broadcast edited out Kanye's comments. My mistake.
