I just read that on account of the FDA's indecision on allowing EC to be sold over the counter, they have actually helped raise awareness of and increase the use of this important drug that has the potential to dramatically decrease the number of unintended pregnancies in this country.
In the past two years, while the FDA has been stalling and stirring up controversy over EC, the media attention and the grassroots efforts of pro-choice groups have helped lead to a dramatic increase in its use.
Barr pharmaceuticals, the maker of Plan B, said that 700,000 prescriptions for emergency contraceptive products were dispensed during the 12 months that ended in June - nearly twice as many as the same period two years ago.
By the way, if you ever hear "pro-lifers" confusing EC with RU-486, please correct them. EC cannot terminate a pregnancy, but it can prevent an unplanned preganancy if taken up to 72 hours after unprotected sex. Anyone who tells you different is full of shit.

I am so glad you wrote about this. Maybe someday I will have something meaningful to say.
