I've been thinking a lot recently about how Republicans can take something like an Ivy League education and turn it into a disease or an albatross if you will, for a Democratic candidate. In our very own state, Tracy Velasquez, former Congressional candidate, current Vice Chair of the Democratic party, has been constantly villified as an "east coast liberal" and too good for the rest of us ordinary, stupid Montanans because of her Harvard education.
From the other end of their mouth, Republican leadership in our state has been quick to point to Supreme Court nominee John Roberts' Harvard education as proof of his excellent qualifications to serve on the court. Check out my favorite ex-governor's letter to the editor in the Bozeman Chronicle that illustrates my point exactly. Guess we want a justice with a good education, but someone to represent Montanans...no way. Intelligence is so 1990s.
It happened with John Kerry too. He got painted as some over-educated elitist who couldn't possibly represent the American people, while George Bush (a Yale grad and Skull and Bones member, just like Kerry) is somehow middle America!? Please.
Are we really that stupid?
Guess so. Seems to be working for them yet again. We are just a bunch of sheep. The American public is Karl Rove's bitch.
